You got up early in the morning came out of you room to the favorite balcony of yours. Got fascinated by the pleasant cool morning breeze and chirps all around. You took a deep breath and felt so nice.
What is happening to the cellular level inside your body? let us peep inside.
Life is an intricately woven miracle; evident in our each and every breath. When I feel my lungs with oxygen, it passes through the finest capillaries in the alveoli, the unit of the lung tissue, to reach the blood stream where it unite with the haemoglobin to rejuvenate with new oxygen. This rejuvenated blood reach the heart, who is relentlessly working to send this freshly oxygenated blood throughout our body, each and every cell.
Within every cell there are few small furnaces where cooking eventually happens. These furnaces are called as mitochondria.
Now think of a situation - you are sitting in front of a fire place with crackling fire burning apparently safely and quietly. At times one or two cinders are flying out and landing on your carpet creating microscopic holes but you are not bothered, because you know this will not going to d any harm. After all they are so small. Just think what will happen to your carpet if this process go moth after month and year after year! You will end up with a ragged carpet in front of your fire place, unless you change the carpet in the meantime.
The same thing happen inside our body continually. Mitochondria within the cell reduces the oxygen by the transfer of electrons to create energy into the form of ATP and produces water as by product. Most of the time this process is uneventful and without any hitch. But required four electrons to reduce oxygen to water, sometimes misses! AND A FREE RADICAL OF OXYGEN IS PRODUCED.
This free radicals are like the cinder in the fire place and the carpet represents your body. The part of your body which are receiving more start to wear out slowly and over a period of time develop degenerative disease.
In your eyes in the form of macular degeneration and cataract, if it is in your blood vessels, the risk of heart attack and stroke increases; at your joints they produce arthritis and in your brain Alzheimer or parkinson's disease!
The total event caused by these free radicals are known as OXIDATIVE STRESS.
The effect of oxidative stress can be seen very easily on the surface of our body. Look to any family photograph closely, particularly the skin of the eldest and the youngest member. The difference you noticed is the result of oxidative stress on our skin. The same thing happens inside of our body too!
Check out for my next posts to know what are the factors, which increases the free radicals in our body? How to combat them ? What we can do to prevent oxidative stress?
